Shop of the week: Molotow

By Qezz Gill  Tuesday Aug 25, 2020

Vibrant and colourful, Molotow is the latest shop to open on Nelson Street.

Located less that 100 yards from Rough Trade, the new art store sells a range of supplies, from spray paints to markers.

Molotow is a spacious and colourful environment. With bright art on the walls and filled to brim with products, it’s the perfect place for street artists to feel stimulated and ready to create.

“The reason we chose Bristol is because it’s such a culturally art-based city and it needed this space,” says manager Chris Jones, who runs the store with business partner Alun Jenkins.

Founded almost 25 years ago, Molotow was one of the first graffiti brands created specifically for street artists.

Since 1996, the brand has already opened stores in Barcelona, Mexico and Italy, but its Bristol store is the first in the UK store.

Supplies at Molotow

As well as selling street art supplies, freelance design and illustration artists based in Bristol are designing  t-shirts for the brand and, in the future, events are planned, including hip hop nights and small exhibitions.

Rather than “conventional craft shops”, the Bristol Molotow store is run primarily for artists by artists.

“Bristol has never had many art spray shops last,” says Chris. “At the moment, we’re just trying to get the shop off the ground and keep going.”

Inspiration is all around
