Shop of the Week: Trylla
From retro toys to eclectic handmade ceramics, Trylla on North Street is “an emporium of weirdness, with walls covered in oddities in every colour you could imagine”.
A ceramics studio, craft store and shop of oddities, Trylla is stocked full of work by Bristol artists and vintage pieces.
Alice Astbury, a ceramics technician by trade opened the store in 2018 and, as well as selling handmade pieces and unique vintage items, Alice teaches short courses in ceramic making in Trylla’s ceramics studio.

Alice teaches Bristolians to create experimental and fantastical clay sculptures, and also runs a drop-in group called ‘Clay Club’.
The club gives members access to the studio each week and is for anyone who is wanting to experiment in ceramic making, but doesn’t want to commit to a full course.
Trylla sells vintage items and handmade pieces
The majority of the business’ stability comes from the courses Alice runs.
When Bristol went into lockdown, Trylla, like many shops, was faced with financial challenge.
“I adapted really quickly,” says Alice. “I introduced a do-it-at-home kit and shifted Clay club into a takeaway programme.”
The store has now reopened, and Alice hopes is to keep showcasing local artists through its eclectic stock and continue running playful and experimental clay classes.
