Terrarium shop celebrates first anniversary
A shop which sells miniature gardens enclosed in glass is celebrating its first anniversary.
Joe Rees opened ome on West Street in Old Market a year ago, after outgrowing the studio he used to start the terrarium business in 2020.
Run with Joe’s partner, Heather, ome has amassed more than 15,000 sales, 570,000 social followers and 2,500 five-star reviews.

To mark the shop’s one-year anniversary, it gave away 30 Fittonia terrariums on Saturday, which saw people queuing outside and went immediately.

“It’s been going very well,” said Joe, reflecting on the last year.
“As a result of having a shop, we’ve been able to hire two staff, Liv and Siân, and also expand internationally in terms of our e-commerce.
“Because we’ve had the extra space, we’ve been able to expand our product range. Because we’ve been able to bring on staff to help with our e-commerce and running the workshops, they’ve given us the time to work on new projects.”
ome ships handcrafted preserved terrariums and moss art across the world, to more than 30 countries and six continents.
The team runs monthly make-your-own terrarium workshops at the shop and pop up at markets across the city.

Explaining where his passion for terrariums comes from, Joe says it was sparked after Heather bought him one as a Christmas present one year.
“As a kid I was artistically driven, I really loved nature,” he said.
“I kind of fell out of art a little bit and discovered terrariums and it rekindled something.
“It’s a really fun blend of arts, nature and science, all in one.”
As well as launching an online terrarium-making course soon, Joe is hopeful to expand ome in the next year, either by taking on a larger premises in Bristol or an additional premises in another city.
