Affordable days out all summer with Great Western Railway

By Anna Doherty  Wednesday May 29, 2019

Great Western Railway are offering off-peak day return fares from as low as £3, giving city dwellers a chance to see what hidden gems the South West has to offer.

When the mayhem of the city centre gets too much, take a trip to destinations in and around Bristol on the Severn Beach Line out from Bristol Temple Meads. The line offers a flat fare return for just £3, reaching Montpelier, Clifton Down and Severn Beach in no longer than 40 minutes.

Montpelier is a hip, urban suburb north of Bristol’s city centre bustling with trendy bars, cafes and independent shops. With carefree and relaxed vibes, the streets are scattered with coffee shops and quirky vintage boutiques. Montpelier also offers the chance to get the perfect Instagram-able shot with the street art that embellishes the area.

As a popular location for the students of Bristol to live in, Montpelier has also acquired many trendy and vibrant bars which often hold events and live music.

Clifton village is one of most picturesque areas in Bristol, lined with 18th and 19th century Georgian houses and dotted with cute independent shops and cafes. Great for a days out with families, couples or solo – it’s brimming with activities and avenues to explore.

Originally opened in 1878, Clifton Arcade is the home to 17 quaint Victorian style shops which offer quality antique gifts, clothes and jewellery and more. Clifton is also the perfect place to get away from the noise and chaos of the lively city centre. The Birdcage walk leads you on a peaceful trail perfect for a leisurely quiet stroll. Or, head to Bristol Zoo and enjoy two for one entry when travelling by train.

Severn Beach is at the end of the line but still only a mere 40 minutes away from Temple Meads. Severn Beach is an ideal family day out offering sculpture trails, big views and long walks along Severn estuary. It’s a true escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
