An escape from the city
A Georgian luxury hotel located in swathes of countryside, Backwell House may only be a 15-minute drive from the centre of Bristol, but it couldn’t feel further away.
Heading up the sweeping driveway on a recent Thursday evening, just weeks before the announcement of a second lockdown, the views were as beautiful as the Bath stone building itself: green fields as far as the eye can see and brimming with wildlife.
We were given a tour of the building by the operations manager, complete with coronavirus safety briefing and interesting facts the history of the manor house, which was occupied by the same family for just over 100 years.
is needed now More than ever
The hotel has been tastefully updated, careful to keep the original feel as much as possible, which only continued as we headed up to our room for the night, which was every bit as grand as the rest of the building, filled with period features, including a rotary telephone and rolltop bath.

Underfloor heating and a roll top bath were unexpected surprises
Modern twists were a pleasant, unexpected addition: A large walk in shower and underfloor heating in the bathroom, keeping the room warm, and a cloud-like double bed.
After settling in, we took a walk around the incredible grounds, wandering through the rose gardens, and taking in the view of the rolling hills. We headed to the lounge for pre-dinner drinks before indulging in dinner.
The food was incredible – a small yet detailed menu with options for all diets.
We enjoyed went for a three-course meal, opting for the salmon starter, vegetarian wellington and crème brûlée for dessert. It was, hands-down, one of the best puddings I had ever experienced. The accompanying wine and gin lists were extensive and reasonably priced, as were the cocktails, draft beers and ciders.

An indulgent vegetarian wellington
After dinner, we had some whiskey night cap cocktails, made with exquisite care and expertise, before heading to lay our heads down and catch some sleep.
Breakfast was included in the price of the room, which was the perfect end to our stay.
A little slice of luxury so close to home, Backwell House left us hoping of another stay soon.

Dreaming of a return
