Boutique hotel finally ready to welcome guests two years behind schedule
A boutique hotel is finally almost ready to welcome guests more than two years after it was first due to open.
Artist Residence was meant to open in October 2019 but the intricacies of converting a former boot factory and Georgian town house into a hotel, and then the global pandemic, both got in the way.
Booking is now open for the hotel’s 23 bedrooms and suites, with the main bar, cafe and restaurant kitchen – which owners promise to be “a buzzing neighbourhood hangout for night or day, work or play” – opening in 2022.
is needed now More than ever
The Grade I-listed building on Portland Square in St Paul’s was previously on Historic England’s Heritage’s At Risk Register before Artist Residence’s Charlie and Justin Salisbury purchased the site.
The Salisburys also own hotels in Brighton, Oxfordshire, Penzance and London, with Bristol their largest and most ambitious project yet.

Speaking in 2019, Justin said: “For us, the real appeal of this dilapidated building is the opportunity to bring a corner of this historic square back to life for the community to enjoy.”
The pair say that their guests will be able to “expect eclectic, thoughtful design bursting with industrial, vintage and antique elements alongside a truly enviable art collection”.
Charlotte added: “We pick art for our places that make you feel good, have a little chuckle or stop for a double take, whether that’s with a bright colour palette, a hint of nostalgia or with witty typography.”
