Tuesday, March 3

Running until March 8, women submit their art. The group show features, among others, Lily Brett’s paintings on boxes, Marta Zubieta’s bright retro illustrations, Laura Robertson’s quirky paintings, Sophie Galliers’ self-portraits and Toni Burrows’ amazing mosaics.

Wednesday, March 4

International Women’s Day – free yoga & massage tasters, Filwood Community Centre, 11am

Yoga by Kelly will hold ten to 15-minute-long yoga tasters for beginners until 3pm in Filwood. It will be a standing sequence, which can also be adapted to chair yoga, and is perfect for anyone whose wanted to give yoga a go, but hasn’t been sure where to start.

There will also be a chance to try a five to ten-minute long Indian head massage.

Thursday, March 5

International Women’s Day Big Breakfast, Bambalan, 7am

This event will celebrate diversity among the city’s women, while raise money for One25, which supports women trapped in, or vulnerable to, street sex work.

“Having run a networking group for women for five years and having attended many business networking events, the last Big International Women’s Day Breakfast left me touched and heartened by some of the stories,” says Jackie Hawken, founder Mindfulness Bristol.

“The gathering was inspiring as was the venue it was one of the most diverse events I have attended in recent years.”

Frida, People’s Republic of Stokes Croft, 6.30pm

2002’s Frida is back on screen for International Women’s Day courtesy of The Wandering Cinema. The evening also includes a self-portrait competition, Mexican bingo and free monobrows.

A Celebration of International Women’s Day, Hartcliffe Library, 3pm

Hosted by Friends of Hartcliffe Library, this event is a chance to celebrate Bristol’s women. There will also be food, conversation and craft making.

Banner making for International Women’s Strike, Boston Tea Party Stokes Croft, 4pm

Organised by UWE Bristol Feminist Society, this is a chance to make banner for Sunday’s Bristol International Women’s Strike 2020. All materials and tools will be supplied.

Sisters Are Brewing It For Themselves, Lost and Grounded, 5pm

Discussing women’s involvement in the brewing industry, co-founders of Lost and Grounded, New Bristol Brewery and Arbor Ales come together for beer chat along with cocktails and pizza degustation accompanied by a musical animation managed by Coco and DJ Baby Danger.

A £1 donation to Womankind Bristol association is included for each pint paid.

In the spirit of International Women’s Day, techno promoters Der Liebe prove that a certain cause really isn’t that hard – to get women onto lineups. Anastasia Kristensen, Helena Markos, Luce, IRENE, Dani Whylie will perform.

Saturday, March 7

Celebrating International Women’s Day, Hannah More Primary School, 10am

Join Up Our Street to celebrate International Women’s Day 2020. The event will be a women-only space to promote wellbeing, celebrate diversity and have fun with other women from the local area.

Activities planned include for, yoga, zumba, hula hooping, cycling, arts and craft, dancing, henna, singing, drama, mindfulness and head massage.

There will be hot drinks and delicious cakes to keep the energy up and a delicious lunch to share and a crêche for pre-schoolers will be available.

International Women’s Day Free Print & Carving Workshop, The Vestibules, 12pm

To mark International Women’s Day 2020, Artspace Lifespace has commissioned CATO Press to create an image dedicated to the women and children who helped ensure the success of one of the most important strikes in American history – The Bread and Roses Strike of 1912.

Join Cato Press at The Vestibules on College Green to take part in a collective carving and print session.

International Women’s Day Special featuring Derek’s Mojo, Bristol Improv Theatre, 7.30pm

A double bill of talent, with If These Walls Could Talk, produced by the theatre’s Imogen Palmer, and Derek’s MoJo, a hybrid improv adventure that weaves traditional improv games into a long-form narrative.

Doors will open at 6.30pm for viewers to see the Exhibition of Inspirational Women in the bar, artwork created in response to the stories unearthed by the If These Walls Could Talk project.

The Stokes Croft venue is holding a women lineup special with acts including Queen Bee & Lorna King, KALA CHNG and Sasha Steppa.

WMN RUN | Bristol International Women’s Day Run + Breakfast, Arnolfini, 9am

Meeting at the Arnolfini Cafe Bar at 9am WMN RUN will head out for a chilled 5km run. There will also be a bag drop available as well as the chance to have a mingle, a cup of tea and some breakfast after at the Arnolfini Cafe. Regulars, newbies, men, friends and family are welcome.

4th Annual International Women’s Day Self-Defence Seminar, Krav Magna Worldwide Bristol, 12pm

A female-led self-defence seminar. The afternoon will be a chance to practise both physical and non-physical techniques to ward off attackers and keep safe.

The seminar will also include short discussions around the politics of self-defence and victim blaming.

The session is open to all self-identifying women, inclusive of trans women and gender nonconforming individuals who may experience discrimination due to their gender.

Bristol International Women’s Strike 2020, city centre, 12pm

On March 8, all the women of the world are invited to join the feminist strike. 13 Bristol feminist organisations have come together to organisation a demonstration and event to mark the day.

“Our identities are different. We are trans, lesbians, migrants, sex workers. The list is endless. But we are all together fighting for the same reasons,” say the organisers. “Feminists of all genders, come and strike with us on International Women’s Day in Bristol!”

Expect music, free food, punk aerobics, an English performance of the Chilean piece A Rapist in Your Path, speeches, football, feminist educational resources and a march.

Freelance curator and creative producer Rebecca Ballard introduces an International Women’s Day programme of eight inspirational favourites from the Feminsta Film Festival.

That International Women’s Day Thing with Lucy Stoner + More, The Jam Jar, 5pm

A lineup of four female DJs head to the Jam Jar on March 8. Lucy Stoner has been a part of the underground American rave scene for nearly two decades and performs her second ever UK show.

Representing Leeds is Jameela, AKA SlutDrop and Miss Kendal, comes over from Derby. Anyone that know the Bristol Jungle scene should be familiar with Lady Lox’s talent and her strictly vinyl set.

International Women’s Day Show, Zed Alley, 7pm

Queer entertainment company Punka presents an evening of drag, burlesque, cabaret and live music from some of the city’s most creative and fierce womxn*. £1 from every tickets sale goes to Kinergy Counselling, a specialist counselling agency for survivors of sexual violence, sexual abuse and rape.

Power & Protest! International Women’s Day 2020, Anson Rooms, 6pm

Organised by The University of Bristol Intersectional Feminist Society and the Women’s Network, the evening begins with a speech from the photo-journalist and activist Eliza Hatch, known for creating the Cheer Up Luv movement.

Alongside Eliza are an array of performances from Pole Fitness, Bollywood Soc, Panto Soc as well as individual performances from the spoken-word poet Angelika Peplinski and singer-songwriter Emily Jane Lumsden

Hair & Headscarves in celebration of International Women’s Day, UWE Bristol, 6pm

A free event open to all and organised by UWE Bristol Equity, this will be a panel discussion hosting some of Britain’s internationally renowned Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic leaders.

The panel will discuss hair and headscarves, the challenges and celebrations and how societal perceptions are changing in a more diverse Britain.

Billed to speak are Mena Fombo, Ikram Abdi Omar, Precious Tatah, and Raifa Rafiq.
