An eclectic array of adverts for Bristol businesses from 1947

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Dec 20, 2022

I recently purchased a guidebook to Bristol published in 1947 and was just as fascinated by the adverts contained within the book as with the entries on the likes of our city’s top post-war attractions more than three-quarters of a century ago.

From tobacco to rubber, trucks to coal, and fur-backed gloves to world-famous sherries, the adverts contained within Arrowsmith’s Guide to the City and County of Bristol 1947-1958 (price: two shillings and sixpence) are nothing if not eclectic, offering a tantalising glimpse of once mighty businesses now nothing but a distant memory as well as a few names still trading.

“The War has certainly changed Bristol,” writes editor WR Hutton in their introduction. “Air-raids have burned the heart out of her, but it was only a heart of stone and steel. The real heart of Bristol, which is her citizens, beats on unchanged and undaunted.”
