A first glimpse into Portland Square’s new boutique hotel
With boutique hotels in London, Brighton, Cornwall and Oxfordshire, Artist Residence is due to open their newest location will be Bristol’s Portland Square.
Opening in October 2019, the the Grade-1 listed building, which was previously a Georgian townhouse and boot factory, was at risk of collapse when the hoteliers bought it in 2015.
It’s set to be a space for everyone to enjoy – from solo travellers to freelance workers – with a free-to-access lounge, bar, restaurant and café, as well as 22 boutique rooms and a basement event space.

Owners Justin and Charlie, along with general manager Nick Ledgard, gave a tour of the building two months before opening day:

The tour started in the entrance to the newest offering from Artist Residence, which is also home to the bar and was decorated with a combination of local artwork and hard hats

The builders uncovered original features that had been hidden for years

The Artist Lookout room will have a spiral staircase that leads up to a living room and outdoor terrace

Justin explains that they recently uncovered a tunnel that runs alongside the building, below street level

The basement will be an event space with a bar

The event space will have an outdoor area and host 60 people

Builders are still uncovering original features, two months before opening
