Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2018, day 10: Bristol After Stroke
Bristol After Stroke is a long-established independent charity helping people affected by stroke, along with their family and friends, across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and the wider West of England.
The charity’s services combine practical, social, emotional and psychological support. This ranges from group activities for carers, signposting to advice and further support, coordinating a recovery journey for people affected by stroke, and stroke cafe events that bring together members of the community to meet, have a cup of tea and form lasting relationships.

is needed now More than ever
The charity was set up in 1983, with the first group running from Frenchay Hospital. The team realised that a stroke could have serious long-term effects, both physical and mental, and the key to improving quality of life and rebuilding a person’s confidence was to combine therapeutic services with social support.
Now, the charity works with around 700 people in the local area every year and are based at The Gatehouse Centre in Hartcliffe. The collaborative nature of the organisation is exemplified by its team of committed volunteers, many of whom have themselves been affected by a stroke.
