Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2018, day 16: Anyone’s Child
Any family that has been impacted by drug usage will know just how devastating it can be. With a huge number of drug-related deaths caused by cutting drugs with other substances, and the future job prospects of many young people destroyed by a criminal conviction for possessing drugs, the risks of the drug market are wide reaching. That is why Anyone’s Child are campaigning to reform current drug laws.
They believe that by making drugs illegal we have handed the market over to unregulated individuals who don’t care about who they sell drugs to or what they might contain, making them even more dangerous. And while some worry that legalisation would increase drug use, Anyone’s Child encourage people to look to Portugal as an example: having made personal drug use legal in 2001, there has been a clear decline in usage across the country.
Anyone’s Child are campaigning for a new approach to drug laws that would enforce legal regulation to reduce the risks drugs pose. Their vision is not that drugs are freely available to all, but that the drugs young people may take are controlled by medical professionals to minimise the damage they could potentially cause.
is needed now More than ever
“We need to move beyond fear, discrimination and punishment, and towards drug laws that are centred around honesty, compassion and health,” the charity say.
