Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2018, day 24: The Harbour
The Harbour is an independent charity delivering free counselling to those experiencing or affected by terminal illness. This includes those who are unwell themselves, those who are caring for someone who is unwell and those who have been recently bereaved because of illness. Every year they support around 300 people, offering one-to-one counselling, couples counselling and group therapy.
The charity was set up in 1992 by psychotherapist Jill Brown, who was profoundly affected when her mother died suddenly when she was a child. “In some ways it is such a simple activity – to listen to somebody, who is suffering,” Jill says. “It is so simple but actually it requires an enormous amount from the listener.
“I always wanted to do something really simple but do it really well and make it a centre of excellence.”
is needed now More than ever
The Harbour employs professional therapists, which allows the charity to focus exclusively on therapy for people affected by terminal illness. They also rely on volunteers who help to run events, engagement work and – importantly – to fundraise, so that they can continue to do their vital work.
