Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2019, day 11: Southmead Hospital Charity

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Dec 10, 2019

It has been a record-breaking year for a charity that works to fund pioneering and innovative healthcare at North Bristol NHS Trust.

Southmead Hospital Charity raised £3.4million for 2018/19, which has gone on programmes that support patients and staff like the Fresh Arts programme and the staff wellbeing programme, as well as on vital research projects and new medical equipment.

The charity successfully concluded its £2million Prostate Cancer Care Appeal with the purchase of two surgical robots for prostate and other urological cancers, which will save more lives and improve recovery times for patients with cancer.

Commenting on the appeal, Anthony Koupparis, consultant urologist and lead for the multispecialty robotic programme, said: “With two new state of the art surgical robots we can continue to be at the forefront of prostate cancer care and grow our expertise in treating other cancers robotically, underlining our reputation as the leading urological robotic centre in the country.

“It means that more patients will benefit from robotic surgery which means shorter operating times and a reduction in their length of stay in hospital.”

The work of Southmead Hospital Charity continues into 2020 with fundraising appeals for a number of projects “that will put Bristol at the forefront of surgical breakthroughs and healthcare”.

These include:

A state-of-the-art digital microscope for brain surgery.

Plans to create a dementia-friendly hospital.

A breakthrough brain cancer research study.
