Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2019, day 7: St Peter’s Hospice

By Bristol24/7  Friday Dec 6, 2019

St Peter’s Hospice is Bristol’s only adult hospice, caring for both patients and their families.

The charity cares for adults with life-limiting illnesses, aiming to improve the quality of their living and dying while extending care and support to their families and loved ones.

The dedicated St Peter’s Hospice team provide physical, psychological and spiritual care for patients both in their own homes as well as at the hospice on Charlton Road in Brentry, also teaching other healthcare professionals about how to care for people at the end of their lives.

All care is provided free of charge, but it costs around £22,000 a day to provide that care.

For most of this money, St Peter’s Hospice relies on gifts in wills, donations, fundraising and their numerous shops across the Bristol area.

St Peter’s Hospice’s first community nurse was appointed in 1978. Over milestones over the years have included:

  • the first shop opening on Wells Road in 1981
  • the opening of their new building in Knowle in 1986
  • hospice at home service starting in 1995
  • 20 shops across the city by 1998
  • new purpose-built site at Brentry opened in 1998

2019 highlights have included the hospice welcoming Caroline Quentin to celebrate one year of their new inpatient unit, the appointment of new chief executive Frank Noble and St Peter’s Hospice being the official charity partner for this summer’s Balloon Fiesta.
