Bristol Charity Advent Calendar – day 13
Women’s Independent Alcohol Support (WIAS) was set up by women for women, who want a safe, non-judgmental support network.
Patsy Staddon, who herself recovered from alcoholism 25 years ago, began WIAS after realising during her PhD in sociology that women with a drinking problem needed very specific support.
“Drunkenness in women was, and largely still is, perceived as shaming, and showing a lack of self-respect,” said Patsy.
is needed now More than ever
“Women have been reluctant to ‘come out’ about their alcohol use for these reasons.
“They often use alcohol to mask their true feelings and help when their lives are difficult or if they are unhappy or living with domestic or sexual abuse.
“WIAS believes women need a woman only space to talk about how they came to have alcohol problems, what sometimes helps and what doesn’t, and an opportunity just for non-judgmental friendship and support.”
Helpline: WIAS operates a telephone helpline every Wednesday evening from 6pm to 10pm on 0117 942 8077
Drop-by: The group also holds a drop-by at Boston Tea Party on Gloucester Road from 10am to midday every Friday (look for the booth with the small WIAS sign)
Support: In January 2017 a new small support groups will begin sponsored by Bishopston, Cotham and Redland Neighbourhood Project
The group are always looking for volunteers to help run the service and would also like to find premises across the city, so women from all areas of Bristol can easily come to the group sessions.
