Bristol24/7 young chefs start industry placements

By Lowie Trevena  Friday Nov 29, 2019

The How To Be A Chef project first launched in 2017 and has developed into a bi-annual 12-week course aimed at young people who aren’t at work or in other education and is run in partnership with Square Food Foundation.

The aim of the programme is to inspire and train a new generation of chefs, while opening up opportunities to gain hands-on experience, training and workshops with some of Bristol’s top chefs and industry qualifications.

Previous graduates have gone on to cater major events and land roles in professional kitchens.

The newest cohort of Young Chefs have recently stepped out of the Square Food kitchen in Knowle West and begun their placements at food and drink locations across the city.

Kaci, one of the Young Chefs, is currently on a placement at Windmill Hill City Farm’s cafe.

“We’re really happy to have made a connection with the brilliant work of the How To Be A Chef course at Square Food Foundation, whose values completely align with our own,” said café manager Anna Ralph. “Kaci’s doing fantastic work here.”

Charlotte, another Young Chef, is at Bean Tree Cafe in Staple Hill. “We love giving people starting out in catering a chance,” says owner Tom Beard. “While classrooms are great, nothing beats on the job learning in this industry. It is great watching the trainees grow in confidence.”

The Young Chefs programme is one of a number of projects run through Bristol24/7’s Better Bristol initiative, a collaborative approach to creating positive impact in the city.
