#BristolCharityAdvent day 18: St Peter’s Hospice

By Ellie Pipe  Sunday Dec 17, 2017

St Peter’s Hospice is a Bristol charity caring for adults with life-limiting illnesses.

The dedicated teams are there to improve the quality of life for patients and provide end-of-life compassionate care, often during the most difficult days of their lives, while also working to support to families and loved ones.

For almost 40 years, the hospice has been caring for the people of Bristol and beyond, and has provided comfort and support for more than 300,000 people.

The charity is now in need of a new inpatient unit to meet the complex needs of patients and their families and has launched a Room to Care appeal to raise the remaining £1.53 million needed to build this.

The total cost of the project is £6.53m, and the appeal urgently needs to raise the final amount by October 2018 to ensure the project can go ahead.

St Peter’s Hospice has already been inundated with donations and its appeal has gained the backing of public figures, including actress and Room to Care Appeal patron Caroline Quentin – but more is still needed.

The new unit will contain 15 individual en-suite rooms, providing patients and their families with the privacy and dignity they deserve during their final days.

Over the next 20 years, the redeveloped unit is expected to support 6,250 patients and around 18,500 relatives and friends.

Bristol Symphony Orchestra is organising a series of fundraising events to help and, in January, members are giving up alcohol to raise money for the cause. To support them with a donation, visit: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/bristolsymphonyorchestra. Or text 70070 and use the code BRS099 to donate by mobile phone.

The orchestra’s Rachel Goodchild said: “All 70 of us have family and friends who have either used or know someone who has used the hospice in some way or another.

“It is a fantastic local cause and we would like to raise as much as we can for them. But we are also hoping to encourage other groups to join us in losing the booze for January and together raise a stinking amount.”

To make a donation to the Room to Care Appeal and help build a 21st Century Hospice for Bristol, visit www.roomtocare.co.uk, call 01275 391400 or visit one of St Peter’s Hospice’s charity shops.
