#BristolCharityAdvent day 21: UBT

By Jess Connett  Wednesday Dec 20, 2017

Bristol Uni Boob Team, or UBT, are a group of local campaigners who help to spread the message of national charity CoppaFeel!. Their aim is to eradicate late and misdiagnosis of breast cancer, especially in young people, and they work tirelessly to get their message out to the students of the University of Bristol and also more widely.

UBT run regular social events to raise funds and get people talking about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, educating young people about checking their breasts. Their message is for everyone to get to know their own bodies so that they are aware of any changes that are occurring, and to feel confident to seek medical help if anything seems out of the ordinary.

The CoppaFeel! charity was set up by Kris Hallenga, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of just 23. As a result, the charity focusses their efforts on spreading their message within a young demographic, who may not be aware that people their age can be susceptible to cancer.

Normalising the idea of talking about breasts in a non-sexual way is also important. The charity’s recent Trust Your Touch campaign broke records when it became the first advert in the UK to show a female nipple on daytime television.

UBT and CoppaFeel! know that cancer is a scary disease, but they try to approach the issue in a light-hearted way and have lots of fun whilst spreading their serious message. Previous local events have included a touch rugby tournament on The Downs with the University of Bristol team, a night of pampering at Therapy Hair and Medispa on St Michael’s Hill, bake sales and pub quizzes.
