‘Dreaming of success and recognition’

By Pamela Parkes  Monday Feb 8, 2016

For four years photographer Chris Hoare immersed himself in the Bristol hip-hop scene.

The ‘Dreamers’ project culminated in a book documenting the music and the characters he discovered.

“It’s always great to finalise a project with an exhibition and something physical, like a book or a magazine,” he says.

“Dreamers is a reflection of the lives of these young musicians and focuses specifically on the hip-hop and grime artists of the city, who dream of success and recognition for their talent.”

The 26-year-old photographer studied art and photography at Filton College. He’s now working on a “number of different loosely connected projects, all focused around change in our city and capturing things before they are gone”.

“I have to be interested in the subject – that could be the people or the place or both, after all they are intrinsically linked.

“Because of the nature of my projects at the moment, which are street based, people are often surprised when you ask them for their picture – it’s always a conversation of understanding. Most of the time they agree.”
