Collecting residents’ views on the impact of climate change in Bristol
As lockdown arrived, young researchers at Bristol University were completing the collection of residents’ views on the city’s future in the light of climate change. They were particularly interested in what changes people were prepared to see and tolerate for a better, more sustainable lifestyle.

The aim was to feed the public’s ideas into discussions about how to manage the impact of climate change on our city in the run-up to the mayoral elections. Residents’ views were seen as an essential part of those discussions, and the researchers spoke to more than 400 people across all areas of Bristol. Then everything changed: the elections were postponed for a year, the city streets emptied, the air cleared and the world as we knew it was different.
A few months on, mayor Marvin Rees is thinking about Bristol post-COVID-19 and how to achieve a greener, more sustainable city when life begins to return to normal. However, before the report is shared with Bristol city planners and officials, the team would like to know whether residents’ opinions on climate change strategies have changed during lockdown – and if so, how. This survey will help identify whether there is a shift in people’s thinking as a result of the pandemic.
