Increasing diversity in the media with Bristol24/7’s work experience programme

By Lowie Trevena  Monday Oct 14, 2019

Each year at Bristol24/7, we welcome more than 100 people through our office doors to join the editorial team for a week.

No week at Bristol24/7 is the same, and anyone wanting to get a taste of the working life of a journalist is encouraged to apply.

Our work experience scheme is award-winning, and more than 500 people have taken part since the publication was founded in 2015. We never stop improving though, and we want to make sure that the diversity of Bristol is represented in our work experience programme.

Bristol24/7 was named among the winners at the 2018 Bristol Employment, Skills and Learning Awards

In light of this, from January 2020, we are holding back one of our two work experiences placements that are offered each week for individuals who may be less likely to access the scheme. This could be  someone from a poorer economic background, someone from the BAME community or someone who is getting back into the workplace. If you feel that perhaps you don’t fit into the traditional image of a journalist, we want you to apply.

Work experience at Bristol24/7 is different for every person. Run by Editorial Assistant Lowie Trevena, each person who attends a week’s work experience is supported throughout and is given the chance to help out in the office and push themselves outside their comfort zone.

Tasks can include anything from interviewing, writing stories, adding to our What’s On section and attending events.

With previous work experience placements going on to work for the BBC and national media, our programme is a chance to dip your toes into the fast-paced world of journalism.

Osob Elmi is currently a reporter for BBC Points West and has previously worked for the BBC World Service and got her first taste of journalism at Bristo24/7

If you want to get involved but feel like perhaps you don’t ‘fit’ into the media world, we want to hear from you. We want help get new and diverse voices into the world of journalism. Let’s make media more diverse and reflect the UK today.
