Marvin Rees Joins the Inspiring Engineering Activities of the Younger Generation
On Tuesday, August 21, dozens of local families from all around Bristol gathered at the Greenway Centre in Southmead for the first of Southmead Development Trust‘s ‘triple whammy invention sessions’, part of six-week programme of free invention and creativity activities.
Outreach branches of two of the West Country’s biggest engineering organisations, Airbus and Dyson, along with the team at engineering museum Aerospace Bristol were on hand to share their knowledge and some inspiring new projects with the local community.

Young people got stuck in with hands-on engineering activities
Activities including building paper rockets, making geodetic domes and skewering balloons to make ‘kebabs’ were popular with the young people, helping them to open their minds to new possibilities and learn about engineering in a fun way.
is needed now More than ever
Families also enjoyed boarding a hot air balloon that was tethered on the centre grounds, which was recently seen in the air at Bristol Balloon Fiesta‘s 40th anniversary. Even Bristol’s mayor Marvin Rees got in on the action, joining the crew in the hot air balloon and posing next to the Pickles McPickles Gromit sculpture in the cafe.

Three of the West Country’s most innovative organisations came together to provide a triple whammy inventions session in Southmead. Teams from Aerospace Bristol, The James Dyson Foundation and Airbus shared their expertise with local families, as well as with visitors to the Greenway Centre on the Gromit Unleashed 2 Trail.
Airbus is not just concerned with the education of young people, but are also active supporters of international humanitarian charities and organisations, orchestrating 64 relief flights in the past ten years, and have launched a youth development programme in the Philippines this year.
Current home of the record-breaking Concorde, Aerospace Bristol also houses brand new space technology, interactive aerospace activities, and a vision to inspire the next generation of engineers, allowing young people to enhance their learning and skills in science, technology and design, giving them a “supersonic” experience of a lifetime.
The James Dyson Foundation is at the very heart of British inventor James Dyson’s thriving engineering company. Expanding in the UK, the US, and Japan, it has a mission to encourage the keen and creative minds of young people to ambitiously seize exciting opportunities in the engineering industry.
