New trail in St Paul’s brings communities together
The Green Way, a new trail connecting public space in St Paul’s, has been completed
Following two years of partnership between by The Architecture Centre, St Paul’s Learning Centre, 91 Ways to Build a Global City, St Paul’s Adventure Playground, Talo and the people and councillors of St Paul’s, the Green Way brings green spaces and community hubs together through three new murals and public area improvements.
“The Green Way project is an amazing opportunity to connect creativity with capital development, for local artists and communities to create permanent changes to the local area,” says Shankari Raj, a local architect who has worked on the project.

As well as three murals, located at St Paul’s Adventure Playground, St Paul’s Learning Centre and the Halston Drive Community Room, bike racks have been installed, new picnic benches put in place, trees planted, new streetlights fitted and insect hotels created.
“This project has really been a collaborative effort between so many local leaders, residents and artists and we’re so pleased to see it come to completion this week,” says project manager Georgina Bolton.
“We want to inspire people to walk and cycle through St Paul’s whilst transforming local social and community businesses and creating places to gather and play.”

The Green Way project started in March 2019. 12 months of community workshops and events were held in the area, funds were raised, and a soul food online competition was held in spring 2020, with winning recipes going on to inspire the three new murals along the route.
Created by local artists Graft and Helyn Gulley, the murals reflect and celebrate the diversity and culinary heritage of the area, with colours inspired by the children of St Paul’s.
“We were pleased to take this from conception to completion, considering how the community money would be most usefully spent,” Shankari adds. “All of which enables the community to better use their public spaces with food at the heart of the offer.”

The Green Way connects St Paul’s Adventure Playground, St Paul’s Learning Centre and the Halston Drive Community Room. The trail goes through St Agnes park, follows Davey Street and St Nicholas Road before taking pedestrian-only pavements to St Paul’s Gardens.
