Some of the pubs granted ‘special’ status in Bristol
Whether they be famed for their size, extensive cider-offering or place in literary history, Bristol’s pubs have a special place in the hearts of many.
And dozens of the city’s favourite boozers have been identified as being so important, they have been given a place on a local list that protects buildings chosen for their architectural quality, townscape value or historical interest.
The list, compiled by Bristol City Council, is a collection of heritage assets that have not been granted legal protection by Historic England or the National Trust, but are felt to be of high worth locally.

The M Shed is included on the list
As well as pubs, the 500 buildings, structures, parks, gardens and open spaces deemed worthy of a place include familiar spots such as M Shed, the Aardman Building on Gas Ferry Road and the Arches on Cheltenham Road.
But there are also some surprises on the list, including four 1882 posts in St Werburgh’s measuring the level of a flood in 1882 and the Colston Tower.

Montpelier station was recently repainted by school children and street artist Silent Hobo
The list was first adopted by the council in 2015 and was last updated in 2018, when a number of the pubs were added.
Being locally listed does not automatically introduce greater planning restrictions. But it does allow for greater recognition during the planning process.
