Redcatch Community Garden opens in Knowle

By Tom Besley  Wednesday Sep 27, 2017

On the second day after its official opening, there’s a cheerful atmosphere around the brand new Roots Café in Redcatch Community Garden, Knowle. Volunteer Kate serves tea and coffee to the numerous friendly faces who stop to chat, and across the way is a stall selling cakes made by local children to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Everything in the café is sourced from the local area and the cups are compostable: sustainability is a big part of the garden’s focus, along with community engagement. The poly tunnel in the garden is filled with fruit and veg that will soon be turned into soups, smoothies, quiches and seasonal healthy food. A second poly tunnel is on the way to provide even more, planned to be up by next week’s grand launch.

The Roots Cafe offers locally-sourced food and drink for very reasonable prices

The project was born out of the desire to create a wellbeing area for all the communities of Knowle, and to provide Redcatch Park with a public garden and cafe.  Turning the disused bowling green into a vibrant new garden has been accomplished by local volunteers.

The passionate individuals launched an online Crowdfunder campaign for the garden’s development earlier this year, raising over £4000. This impressive feat was matched by Bristol Green Capital’s Better Bristol initiative, resulting in a donation total of more than £8000.

The garden’s entrance is bordered by beautiful plants and hedges

A series of workshops and classes are upcoming – everything from carpentry and agriculture to mental health and stress management will be offered to visitors of all ages. The team want to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone who drops by, either just by sitting in the garden, breathing the fresh air, or by participating in a more structured events.

Though the garden is now open, its official launch party takes place on October 7, which is also the first day of Healthy Cities week. It will feature opportunities to try out apple pressing, crafting and other activities, as well as food and drink from local suppliers.

The café will serve produce grown in the garden

Redcatch Community Garden will be welcoming in the general public for a programme of exciting events, starting with a launch party on Saturday, October 7 2017. To keep up with progress, follow Redcatch Community Garden on Facebook.
