Somerset Wood Project branches out
Over 14 years Somerset Wood Recycling (SWR) has gained a reputation for producing beautiful hand-made furniture at affordable prices. The project sources and salvages timber from all over Somerset – from construction sites like Hinkley C to small family run saw-mills, which use only locally grown sustainably managed trees.
Visitors to the SWR base in Weston can see furniture being manufactured and can browse the massive selection of timber available, everything from oak beams and elm planks to pallet wood and plywood. They can to look around the newly created showroom, which has various types of furniture on display – everything from tables and shelving and tv units, to serving boards and Christmas gifts. Before long there will also be other complimentary products in the showroom; specifically good things made locally – such as organic honey made in Weston and organic chilli sauces made in Butcombe.
is needed now More than ever
How it all started
SWR, a community interest company, was launched by Tristan Tudor in 2006. Tris grew up in Weston and wanted to invest in the local community and create an environmentally sustainable business.
Tris says, ‘over the years we have gained expertise in using recycled wood – which can present difficult and surprising challenges. We have also managed to create a style which leans towards the modern and the industrial, rather than the traditional. And we have also expanded into other areas of product manufacturing that early on we never had in mind.
A good example is the Bristol Coffin, which we designed for the Bristol based funeral directors, Divine Ceremony. We make these totally from recycled timber and they are a great addition to the range of eco-coffins available. The Bristol Coffin has been used throughout the South West – and the most recent one we made went to Essex!’
If you are looking for well made, attractive furniture, for your home or your business, or want to find some interesting timber for a particular project, it’s easy to pay a visit or get in touch. You can visit their website or go to their Facebook and Instagram pages for the most recent news and projects.
