In pictures: The Bristol Wing

By Theo Gittens  Friday Feb 2, 2018

Bristol’s Grade II listed former police station has been beautifully converted it into a YMCA hostel.

The Bristol Wing on Bridewell Street is now open, providing affordable accommodation for backpackers in the historic 1930s building, as well as offering emergency shelter for young homeless people.

The original lift from the 1930s has been restored and kept as a centrepiece. The second floor pays homage to the building’s history as a police station.

The interior features quirky furniture, which wouldn’t look out of place on a Wes Anderson set

The lounge is a cosy place to relax

The first floor is dedicated to a communal space, where guests can hang out and cook

Hand-drawn pictures of birds adorn the walls

The hostel has a number of accommodation options available, from shared dorms to private double rooms

The YMCA can provide a safe place to stay for 72 homeless young people each year, using its own profits to provide emergency accommodation

The third floor used to house a circus troupe; the new decor celebrates its interesting past
