The School of Activism teaches people how to change the world

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday Mar 27, 2019

Forget algebra and grammar, The People’s Republic of Stoke Croft is hosting a ‘school’ with a difference over the Easter holidays.

The School of Activism is for anyone aged eight and older. It isn’t a school teaching maths, English and science but instead teaching empowerment, changing the world and improving the future of the planet for everyone.

Starting on Wednesday, April 3 and running until Monday, April 22, new events and workshops are continually being announced.

The People’s Republic of Stokes Croft, joined by Extinction Rebellion, Bristol Learning Co-op and other community organisations and activists, have plenty for all ages to get involved with. Activities are aimed at children, teenagers, adults as well as the whole family.

Some of the workshops taking place include making a zine and building with eco bricks. Flash mob planning, the importance of privacy and  story time for rebels are also on the timetable.

Colin Moody is hosting several photography workshops

Badge, banner and poster making are on the programme for those who are art-focussed. For anyone looking to learn about reporting and telling stories, there’s photography, documentary-making, radio production and writing workshops as well.

Lisa Furness, events, venue and education manager and director of the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft, says: “We put this programme together to enable the people of Bristol – who may be feeling marginalised or disempowered – to gain skills, confidence and practical tools to address issues that concern them, from climate change to potholes.“

Zines are DIY publications can be a powerful way to tell a story and spread information

Some of the workshops, events and activities require donations but most are free. Everyone, no matter what age they are, is encouraged to come together and change the world this Easter.
