By Bristol24/7  Monday Jul 1, 2019

With the school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to start planning ways to entertain the kids. We often forget that Bristol is surrounded by beautiful towns which are just a short train ride away with Great Western Railway.

Here are some of the best places to visit for day trips over the summer:

Set to the east of the Mendips, Frome is a beautiful, historic medieval town filled with independent shops, a great creative scene and cottage-industry craft workshops aplenty.  Pay a visit to Cheap Street, one of Frome’s prettiest streets. Cheap Street has retained its historic medieval character, with a leat running down the street, carrying water from the stream beneath St John’s Church. Don’t miss Frome Festival, which runs from July 5-14.

Bradford on Avon – £11.10 off-peak day return

The Dundas Aqueduct carries the Kennet & Avon Canal over the River Avon

Bradford on Avon is a magical, historic town nestled on the hillside and banks of the picturesque River Avon; filled to the brim with places waiting to be explored. You can enjoy countryside walks along the river/canal from Freshford, Avoncliff and then on to Bradford on Avon. On the way, stop off at the Dundas Aqueduct at Freshford and enjoy a drink at The Inn at Freshford.

The beautiful park in Trowbridge offers walks, play areas and sports facilities, and the town boasts delightful independent shops, well-known High Street outlets and a multitude of cafés, pubs and restaurants. There is also a weekly Wednesday market, with local stalls and traders.

Bath Spa – £8.10 off-peak day return

Thermae Bath Spa is Britain’s only natural thermal spa, offering traditional and state-of-the-art spa facilities
