Some of Ujima Radio’s new breakfast show team
Bristol24/7 visited Ujima Radio’s studios in The Station on Silver Street to talk to Rise Up producer Jasmine Ketibuah-Foley and presenter Desmond Brown.
What sort of subjects will the new breakfast show cover?
Jasmine: “Ujima Radio are broadcasting to serve all ethnic minority communities in Bristol so we always do stories that are mainly aimed at that sort of people. We will be looking at current issues, funny things and anything that feels like the people want to hear. It’ll be everything you want from a breakfast show.”
What do you want to bring to the show?
Desmond: “My day job as chair of the Commission for Race Equality is very serious, so I like the fact that I don’t have to be serious and I can joke but also bring up some serious topics. I am very lucky I sit at tables with lots of important people in the city, so I can bring that to the show… But it’s also light hearted and I enjoy that. I get up at 5.30am, come in and it’s almost like a dream because it is just jokes, jokes and horseplay – without the horses.”
What collaborations are you hoping to link up with in the future?
Jasmine: “There are a lot of grassroots organisation in Bristol that we plan to work with. Ujima Radio has always worked with grassroots organisation and I’m sure they will be plenty of things we will be doing together. When it comes to events we’ve always made sure we’re at the forefront. If there’s a protest we make sure we’re there and talking about what’s happening and what people have been saying afterwards.”

Where do you see this show going in the future?
Jasmine: “Probably in five years time this will be the main platform we put volunteers through who come here to learn how to drive a desk or be on a show, present and talk to each other. And I hope that most people in Bristol will be listening to it because it will be the best thing on the radio in the morning.”
Do you think the show is going to change over time?
Desmond: “People just have to keep listening because we’re going to develop. It’s really early days and there’s going to be more content and games. What we really want is feedback from listeners… It’s just the beginning so just watch this space.”
