Walking 1,000 laps of the backyard for charity
Jason Menhinnitt, a 10-year-old living in Barton Hill, is raising money for NHS Charities Together by walking 1,000 laps of his back yard.
Jason, who lives with his mum and dad in a ground floor flat, aims to raise £1,500 for the charity, which supports NHS staff across the country.
“I have found the Covid-19 situation very scary and hard to understand. I often sit down and watch some of the news about it with my mum and dad,” says Jason.
is needed now More than ever
“I really wanted to do something to help so I came up with the idea to walk 1,000 laps of my 50-metre backyard to raise some money for the NHS.”

The family don’t have a back garden, hence the backyard challenge name. Jason completed the 1,000-lap challenge over the weekend over April 24 and 25. In total, the ten-year-old walked 31 miles over the two days.
“As a family we have a lot to thank the NHS for,” says Jason. “My mum is physically disabled with Cerebral Palsy and my dad was very poorly as a child and spent a lot of time in hospital.”
Jason’s mum, Katie Menhinnitt adds: “Jason saw the story of captain Tom on the news and asked me if he could do something like that.”

“It also seemed a great opportunity to give him something positive to come out of this whole Covid-19 situation, which is such a difficult situation to deal with, especially for children,” says Katie. “He is such a kindhearted, caring boy.”
