Walking tours to bring Old Market’s history to life
Not all people living in Britstol are aware of the rich history and stories surrounding Old Market,and a new partnership is bringing some of this little known history to life.
From medieval tales of the Stag and Hounds public house to where Britain’s most prolific serial killer once resided, Old Market has lots of historical landmarks.
First Base and Visit Bristol have created a series of walking tours with John Hirst, chief executive of Destination Bristol saying they hope “to encourage residents and visitors alike to get their walking shoes on and start exploring.”

The tours will take place on April 1, which is National Walking Day, and on April 22 and May 13, taking place during the city’s popular annual walking festival, Bristol Walk Fest.
The walking tours will begin outside the Bristol Marriott Hotel City Centre, where the entrance to Bristol Castle once stood, and will end in the “haunted” canteen at Gardiner Haskins.

“With so many historic landmarks in Old Market, including the Soapworks building, we wanted to share the place we now call home with everyone in the city,” says Lucinda Mitchell, project director at First Base. “We know that celebrating Old Market’s heritage is really important to local people and our partnership with Visit Bristol is the perfect way to do this.”
First Base and Visit Bristol are asking local residents to share their knowledge of the area or any of Old Market’s hidden gems on social media using the hashtag #oldmarketgems.
