We The Curious not likely to reopen until 2024

By Martin Booth  Thursday Feb 23, 2023

We The Curious is not likely to open until early 2024 following the fire that broke out on its roof in April 2022.

A multi-million-pound repair programme is currently underway in the building, with the We The Curious team continuing to hold events across Bristol.

Morph and other popular exhibits remain protected while repair work continues

Repairs to the Grade II listed building so far have seen the second floor completely gutted and stripped back to concrete and steel because of the extensive water damage, and enough new cables to stretch from Millennium Square to Bath.

Four new air source heat pumps have been installed, with new solar panels that will be able to generate 12 per cent of the building’s energy.

We The Curious chief executive Donna Speed said: “Everyone has been working all out to reopen We The Curious for the coming summer.

“Unfortunately, we now know that this isn’t going to be possible with a repair project of this scope and complexity.

“It is disappointing, but also a great reminder that We The Curious is more than just a wonderful venue; it’s the people, the joy of connecting and exploring ideas together.”

Speed added: “It’s great to see the repair work progressing, and as soon as we know more about the updated timeframe, we’ll be letting everyone know.

“We can’t wait to be open again and welcoming everyone back through our doors!”

Four new heat pumps each weighing one tonne have already been installed

The Easter holidays will include a busy programme of community events from We The Curious, with May half term seeing the team back on Millennium Square for drop-in family activities.
