Green Capital: Switch-on for solar power tree

By Pamela Parkes  Tuesday Apr 21, 2015

A 15ft tree sculpture with multi-directional solar panels for leaves has been switched on in Millennium Square.

The Energy Tree is the work of artist John Packer and Bristol-based Demand Energy Equality.

The striking metal structure was built with the help of volunteers from the Bristol Drugs Project, who built the solar panel ‘leaves’ for the tree from scratch and worked with Packer on the metal work for the tree’s branches.

The leaves are constructed from recycled fragments of broken solar panels and will produce up to 1kw of green energy which will be used to power free WiFi and mobile phone charging points.

The exhibit has been created part of Bristol Green Capital 2015 and is designed to engage the public in energy issues.
