Green Capital 2015: DIY Draught Proofing
Victorian terraces – they may be beautiful and sought after – but anyone who has ever lived in one will know just how draughty they are and how much it can cost to insulate them properly.
A new scheme, launched by the Easton Energy Group (EEG) and funded by Bristol 2015, is helping people warm up their homes and learn news skills, with minimal upfront costs.
EEG has been working on energy initiatives in Easton and Lawrence Hill for the past 5 years. “Victorian housing stock does make it more difficult for people to insulate their houses, but it is possible to do so,” says Zoe Banks Gross who works with the community group.
is needed now More than ever
The group has developed the HEAT project (Home Energy Action Team) which will work with fuel poor households across East Bristol helping them to draught proof their own homes.
EEG hopes to help around 50 households draught proof their homes in 2015, create a tool library for residents to rent tools and ultimately aims for the service to be ongoing.
“We are hoping we can help people at all levels of income. If people don’t have the means to do a larger project on their home they can probably contribute a smaller amount for basic draught proof measures,” says Zoe.
“As part of our funding from Green Capital we were able to buy a cargo bike so we don’t need a van to visit people in the area. It will carry all of our draught proofing materials and tools to help people quickly and easily keep their homes warm.”
“People can borrow the tools and we are happy to help train people how to use them so they can do really basic draught proofing projects in their homes to keep the cold out.”
