Green Capital: Fashion salvage
In an age of fast fashion at throw away prices a one-off Fashion Salvage event has been organised by Bristol Textile Recyclers.
Taking place on Bristol’s Harbourside, Fashion Salvage will show people how simple tricks and a little bit of creative thinking can not only help the environment by giving clothes and accessories a longer lease of life, but also save money – without compromising on style.
Vintage fashion fans will also have the chance to hunt through second-hand clothing to create new looks, and give their wardrobes an injection of seasonal style.
is needed now More than ever
Aimee Campanella of Bristol Textile Recyclers, said: “We’re very excited to be welcoming Bristolians to our Fashion Salvage event and giving them the opportunity to breathe new life into their wardrobes.
“Fashion is fast these days but it need not be wasteful. There are so many ways to upcycle old clothes into on-trend outfits, and this event is all about highlighting that.”
Throughout the same weekend (2nd – 4th October) the popular Train Treasure event will also be returning to the Lab, giving people the opportunity to take home a few lost gems donated by Great Western Railway (GWR) while raising money for a local homeless charity.
Over 400 items of unclaimed property are collected on GWR trains each week, with all items taken to the lost property department at Bristol Temple Meads to be logged, sorted and reunited with owners where possible. The unclaimed treasure includes sports equipment, brand new clothing, books and all sorts of weird and wonderful items.
The original Train Treasure event took place in June of this year and raised over £2,000 for local charities including Brandon Trust, St Mungo’s Broadway and Creative Youth Network.
Bryony Morgan, founder of the Made in Bristol collective and manager of the Bristol 2015 Lab, added: “We’re thrilled to be hosting a weekend packed with inspiring events that encourage people to re-use and refresh their wardrobes. How we make the most of our resources is a key theme during Bristol’s year as European Green Capital and we want to demonstrate that recycling can be fun – and fashionable!”
