Green Capital 2015: Back on your bike
Life Cycle supports people across the UK who want to start cycling. They also provide training for people who are nervous cyclists or who want to get back on their bike.
The Bristol-based charity, supported by Bristol 2015, is running a series of nature themed rides in partnership with the Avon Wildlife Trust, to help the over 50s and people with mental health issues back on their bike.
Heather Pugh, Inclusive Cycling Coordinator at Life Cycle UK said: “The thing about Life Cycle is to make cycling accessible and pleasurable for as many people as possible. We want to help people get out into nature and enjoy the freedom that it brings.”
is needed now More than ever
Jon Newman, 71, took part in Life Cycle’s first nature themed ride in Bristol earlier this year: “It’s a good excuse to get out and have some fresh air.
“Unfortunately I’m no longer really capable of running and I can’t walk much but I can just about cycle so I enjoy joining the group.”
Heather says the rides are not only about getting active and healthy, they also help connect people in the city who many be isolated or lonely.
“By doing these group rides, you’re doing something social together, connecting people to nature and having a really nice day out.
“We’re really excited about this funding because it’s enabled us to do many more rides with experts where we can go and find bits of Bristol where you don’t even know there’s any wildlife.”
