Famous LGBTQ+ literary group comes to Bristol
The Polari Literary Salon is a London-based LGBTQ+ writing and performance group, and the award-winning salon is touring the UK as part of The Polari Prize Tour.
The tour is hosted by Paul Burston, who describes the salon as “a celebration of diverse voices which takes the form of a literary cabaret where authors, poets and other writers perform their work”.
Paul is a full-time writer and the author of six novels. He is also the curator and host of Polari Literary Salon, based at London’s Southbank Centre. Polari is an apt name, as it was a ‘secret’ language used by people identifying as LGBTQ+ in the past, and the salon focuses on language and queerness.
is needed now More than ever
When asked why the salon was going on tour throughout the country, Paul said: “Polari began in 2007 in a small bar in Soho and has been steadily growing ever since. Touring was the next logical step.
“Each tour is more ambitious than the last. This tour is our biggest yet, taking in 20 dates around the UK and beyond.”
Describing the salon as “lively, fun, entertaining and inclusive”, Paul says that the aim of the evening is for the audience “to be entertained, moved and reduced to tears – of laughter!”
At the Bristol event on Saturday June 1, Jeremy Dixon, Sarah Hilary, VG Lee and Bristol-based artist Tom Marshman will be performing their work
Taking place at the Waterstones in the Galleries, Paul is excited about bringing the show to the city: “We’re really looking forward to coming to Bristol. We have a great, truly diverse lineup for you – everything from crime fiction to comedy, poetry and performance,” he says.
With a great mix of LGBTQ+ writers, poets and performers, it’s is set to be a night to celebrate queer identity and the language surrounding the community.
