Tom Baldwin to run for mayor
Tom Baldwin will run for mayor of Bristol for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition.
The campaigner, who stood at the last elections in 2012, will be standing on a platform of anti-cuts and anti-austerity.
Baldwin said the council had been hit by a “tsunami of cuts” which has affected libraries, care services, sexual and domestic violence services, leisure centres, parks, and children’s centres since the last election.
He added: “The Tory government has slashed the budgets for local government but our local representatives have done nothing to resist these attacks.
“They have dutifully done the Tories’ dirty work and passed the pain on to Bristolians. This is a far cry from ‘putting Bristol first’ as Ferguson promised in 2012. All the main parties have joined his cabinet, with Labour voting for every one of his cuts budgets.
“I am standing because I think these cuts can be stopped. If elected I will move a budget based on what Bristol needs, not the demands of the Tory cutters. We can win back the funding that has been stolen from this city.”
Baldwin said housing would be a key focus if he is elected. He called home ownership in Bristol an “impossible dream” for many and promised to build thousands of publicly-owned homes.
Baldwin came 10th of 15 candidates at the last election, with 1,412 votes. By standing this year, he brings the total number of mayoral candidates to 10.
