£1.32m raised at Gromit Unleashed 2 auction

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 4, 2018

The Gromit Unleashed 2 sculptures came together for the last time on Wednesday evening as they were auctioned off to raise as much money as possible for The Grand Appeal.

Underneath the wings of Concorde at Aerospace Bristol, paddles were raised in the air to bid for guests’ favourite Gromit, Wallace or Feathers McGraw, with bids coming in from people in the room as well as on the phone and over the internet.

A Grand Tribute and Wallambard were the biggest successes of the night, both selling for £55,000, with the average price of a sculpture around £20,000.

The auction took place underneath the wings of Concorde

As auctioneer Richard Madley drew proceedings to a close soon before 11pm, the grand total of the night was revealed: £1,321,000.

When this was added to money raised during the trail and four of the sculptures being sold before the auction, the sum came to £1,620,000.

Aardman co-founder Peter Lord introduced the evening from the stage, where he was later joined by representatives from The Grand Appeal detailing exactly where the money would go.

Sixty-two of the Gromit Unleashed 2 sculptures and four pocket-sized penguins were all raising money for Bristol Children’s Hospital and St Michael’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

After comedian and actress Dawn French warmed up the crowd with a rendition of The Greatest Love of All, it was time for the auction to begin with auctioneer Richard Madley wielding the hammer.

Here were the evening’s top-three bestsellers:

1. Wallambard: £55,000

2. A Grand Tribute: £55,000

3. Gromit: £42,000
