170,000 people sign Eastville man’s petition to keep face masks in shops
More than 170,000 people have signed a petition calling for wearing masks in shops to remain a legal requirement after lockdown restrictions ease.
The petition says face coverings should remain mandatory “until there is a substantial decline in Covid-19 transmission cases, and more of the population have been double-jabbed”.
It was started by Martyn Cordey, an Eastville resident and former special needs teacher.
is needed now More than ever
Martyn, 58, told Bristol24/7: “I have multiple health conditions so I know every time I leave the house, I’m at risk of catching and spreading the virus, even though I’ve been vaccinated.
“I want to keep myself and my loved ones safe, so I think wearing a face mask inside is a small price to pay to get the virus further under control.”
Martyn launched the petition following Boris Johnson’s announcement on Monday that all restrictions could be lifted by July 19.
It states: “Until the Delta variant was allowed to proliferate in the UK, the battle was being won against Covid-19 but with the recent upsurge in cases, I believe that face coverings should continue to be worn in shops, supermarkets and other indoor spaces where there is currently a legal requirement.
“I believe that the longer the virus is allowed to circulate, the greater the risk of more variants developing. With this risk, could be an even greater risk of a variant appearing which could render the current vaccines useless. Furthermore, maintaining the current requirement to wear face coverings in enclosed spaces would help to suppress the recent increase in cases, hospitalisations and deaths.”
Commenting on the Change.org page, supporter Jackie Barker said: “People can choose whether or not to attend leisure events etc. However, many don’t have a choice when it comes to visiting shops. Let’s help protect them.”
Plans for easing restrictions are due to be reviewed again this week and confirmed in a press conference on Monday, July 12.
