20-year plan to transform Filton Airfield
The plans could take 20 years to complete, but an application to build thousands of homes, plus shops, schools and health centres on Filton Airfield has now been unveiled.
Land owner BAE Systems has submitted an application to South Gloucestershire Council to develop the 353-acre site.
Work could start as early as 2016 and the plan is to incorporate:
is needed now More than ever
- 2,675 dwellings and apartments
- Up to 60 acres of commercial land
- Retail/food and drink facilities
- 120-bed hotel
- Secondary school, two primary schools and 2 nurseries
- Health centre
- Pub
- Supermarket
- New railway station
Planning consultants Alder King said though the work would take up to 20 years to complete.
“A 20-year timeframe … is entirely reasonable in our view given the size of the site and the need to respond to changing market conditions over time,” Simon Fitton from the firm said.
The airfield closed at the end of 2012 after BAE Systems said the site was no longer viable and announced its intention to sell the land for housing and business development.
