A new programme supports people in Bristol who need a helping hand

By Lowie Trevena  Tuesday May 18, 2021

A new initiative has been launched to provide vital support for people who need a helping hand in Bristol.

A new programme of Community Contracts will be established between the recently formed Brighter Places and Bristol community groups to offer aid to residents.

The programme has launched just over a month after Brighter Places was established, following the merger of the Solon South West and United Communities housing associations, managing more than 3,300 homes.

Over the next 12 months, Brighter Places will enter Community Contracts with six community groups, which will see mutual commitments agreed between the two organisations.

The first contract will be with St Werburgh’s Community Centre, with Brighter Places offering support such as financial help in exchange for the centre relaunch and continue its food bank that supports a growing number of Brighter Places residents.

“We are very grateful for the continued support Brighter Places has given St Werburgh’s Community Centre,” says Goska Ong, director of the centre.

“Thanks To Brighter Places we were able to set up the Community Food Share service as a response to the difficulties faced by people in the local area.

“Now with the Community Contract, we can continue to support local families making sure the food bank is there for them in these difficult times.”

Brighter Places residents and staff will be invited to have their say in selecting local community groups to support in future Community Contracts.

“Supporting local community groups which provide meaningful support to our residents is a key part of our DNA,” says Anna Klimczak, chief executive of Brighter Places.

“It is concerning that a growing number of our residents rely on food banks. But I am delighted that with our pilot Community Contract, we can help St Werburgh’s Community Centre food bank continue to operate and provide this vital support.”
