Another crowdfunder to help much-loved Big Issue seller

By Martin Booth  Monday Feb 22, 2021

Everyone knows Jeff Knight, who was fist-bumping long before it became cool.

The much-loved Big Issue vendor, usually to be found on Stokes Croft, came to the UK from Jamaica and has been selling the magazine for the last two decades.

He was recently immortalised in street art and now lives in a campervan purchased by the many people across Bristol who know him.

Two years after that first campaign, another crowdfunder has now launched, which in less than 24 hours has already almost hit its initial £1,200 target.

“So as you may remember two years ago we raised enough money to buy Jeff, Big Issue seller on Stokes Croft a live-in van,” writes Deasy Bamford.

“It’s been great and he’s been able to move about a few times and find himself a good place to have his base.

“Life been a bit more challenging for him in virus times , but he’s managing to have some security, through his van.”

The new crowdfunder is needed to pay £700 for some welding, insurance of £350 and annual tax of £165.

Deasy added: “This is what he needs to keep him legal and safe where he is. So many people helped Jeff last time and made it possible for him to have a place to call his own in his own way, and so we are asking if you could help again and keep him safe for the next year.

“This is not the best long term solution for Jeff , but it is necessary right now, so if you can chip something in his happy hat we’d both be really grateful.”
