Appeal launched to fund vital coronavirus research in Bristol
Money raised for a new appeal will fund research into coronavirus drug treatments, a deeper understanding of how the virus spreads and its long-term impact on the health of people who recover.
Southmead Hospital Charity has launched the Coronavirus Research in Bristol appeal to fund the three projects.
In partnership with Bristol hospitals, Public Health England and the University of Bristol, the projects will contribute to a UK-wide research programme for coronavirus, which researchers hope will lead to new breakthroughs in fighting the virus.
is needed now More than ever
Donations made to Southmead Hospital Charity’s appeal will fund research into developing tests to diagnose the virus, explore secondary infection complications after having Covid-19, and test new drug treatments.
The three research projects will help experts understand the long-term impact of the virus more clearly and support the NHS in the future.
“Our team of highly skilled and experienced researchers are experts in pioneering clinical and academic studies, putting us at the forefront of the fight against coronavirus,” says Southmead Hospital Charity director, Sarah Harrison. “Southmead Hospital has a worldwide reputation in research excellence through our specialist Research & Innovation Centre.
“With the support of our donors we can carry out ground-breaking research which will help us to diagnose the virus, increase our understanding of how it spreads, and develop new potential treatments.”
“Our research is directly changing patient care now and by supporting these projects you will be helping us to transform patient services by enabling us to develop innovative breakthroughs sooner,” says deputy director of research & innovation at North Bristol NHS Trust, Dr Rebecca Smith.
“Together we can make a real difference to the research of tomorrow.”
