Appeal over dog found ‘rotting’ alive

By Bristol24/7  Friday Nov 27, 2015

An abandoned dog found wandering in Lockleaze with open sores, rotting flesh and nails growing into his paws had to be put down by traumatised RSPCA staff.

Bristol Cats and Dogs Home in St Philips is appealing for information on the German Shepherd picked up near Sheldon Road and Romney Avenue on November 6.

“This dog had been neglected to the extent that he had open sores, his nails had completely overgrown and some had grown right round and back up through the pads of his feet,” a spokesperson from the centre said.

“The skin between every single toe on his paws was infected, sores to his mouth, scarring and infected wounds from not being treated for a potential skin condition and was generally in poor health.”

The spokesperson said they had no option but to “alleviate” any more suffering of the dog they named Zen.

“This was a very traumatic experience for everyone involved. The suffering this poor dog went through would have been horrific.”

They added that the condition of the dog suggested it had been kept inside alone. “The smell of rotting flesh, infection and bad skin was so terrible that it made our eyes water so it is hard to think that somebody may have had this dog living with them in a house,” they said.

The dogs and cats home is asking for anyone with information to contact the main RSPCA control centre on 03001234999, quoting reference number 476/26/11/15.
