Appeal to help pay for funeral of ‘Bristol legend and City superfan’
The family of one of Bristol City’s most famous fans are appealing for help to give him the send off he deserves.
A crowdfunding campaign to cover the cost of a funeral for Stoney Garnett has already been inundated with donations, raising more than £3,300 of the £5,000 target in less than two weeks, but further support is needed.
A comedian, compere and City superfan, Stoney twice ran to be mayor of Bristol in 2012 and 2016, with free cider for all among his campaign pledges.
is needed now More than ever
Tributes have been pouring in since the former postman, described as a “Bristol legend”, died unexpectedly at his home on July 24.
Well-known for his red feathered fedora, which he bought on a holiday in Austria, Stoney was born in Knowle West and lived in Whitchurch.
Darren Harding, who set up the crowdfunding campaign, says: “Stoney was an iconic character from Bristol who loved his family and Bristol City. He touched the lives of those around him and to all who met him. Stoney dedicated his life to following Bristol City, charity events and spending time with family. He loved the city of Bristol.
“We all devastated by the loss of Stoney and were not prepared for the high cost of a funeral service. We want to give Stoney the memorial and funeral he deserves, to honour his memory and say our last goodbyes.
“We are currently asking for donations to help cover the cost of Stoney’s funeral. We would like to raise £5,000 in order to be able to afford the funeral service.”
