By Martin Booth  Monday Aug 29, 2022

Armed police swooped on a popular wedding venue on the morning of Bank Holiday Monday.

Leigh Court is owned by and is also the headquarters of Business West as well as having a garden centre and tea room.

A passer-by on a bus heading along Pill Road filmed half a dozen armed officers close to the entrance to Leigh Court:

It is unclear why armed police responded to the incident, which began after a man was seriously injured with what police describe as “significant injuries” to his head and hand.

The man was taken to hospital by paramedics and a search of a building close to where he was found revealed cannabis to be growing.

A building close to the entrance to the estate – which originally housed a Tudor mansion – was cordoned off.

Police remained on site in Abbots Leigh for most of the day.

In a statement, an Avon & Somerset police spokesperson said: “Emergency services were called to Abbots Leigh at about 11.20am this morning (Monday) due to concerns for the welfare of an injured man.

“The circumstances of how he came about those injuries is unclear, but witnesses reported seeing a vehicle leaving the scene. Enquiries are ongoing to trace the vehicle.

“The man was found with significant injuries to his head and hand and has been taken to hospital by paramedics.

“A search of a building near to where the man was found has been conducted by officers and a suspected cannabis grow has been identified. A scene remains in place while enquiries continue.

“At this time it is too early to speculate whether the two incidents are linked, however, we will keep an open mind as our enquiries develop.”

Soon before 7pm on Monday, the police cordon remained in place.

Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call 101 and give reference number 5222208473.
