Arnos Vale Cemetery raises funds to rebuild

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday Nov 25, 2020

Arnos Vale Cemetery is raising money to keep the site open following a difficult year.

The pandemic has shown the importance of green, open spaces for mental health and wellbeing, and the Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust, which runs the site, are asking for support to stay open to all for years to come.

The trust doesn’t receive Government of council funding, instead relying on public donations and income from events.

With so many of the planned events cancelled due to coronavirus, the organisation has been left with a large gap in its funding.

“As a small charity the impact of Covid-19 cannot be underestimated,” says CEO Ellie Collier. “After a hugely difficult year, it’s really uplifting seeing our visitors having a lovely time on site.

“But we would normally generate over 70 per cent of our income through our events, shop and room hire so the financial impact on us has been huge.

She adds: “I would like to thank all those that have donated and supported us so far, your support has been essential during these incredibly difficult times.

“The pandemic has shown us just how important it is to have access to green spaces in the city; many people have found comfort in beautiful places.”

The trust is hoping to raise £12,000 through its Christmas appeal, which will keep the cemetery open and funded into 2021. Christmas trees will also be sold on site to raise more money. These can be ordered by called 0117 971 9117.

“Day to day, we rely on a very small team and our many dedicated volunteers to maintain the space for our communities,” says Sophie Kinsman, fundraising officer at Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust.

“We rely entirely on the generosity of the public – and the income from our private and public events, which are currently all cancelled – to keep this historic gem open.”

“By supporting our Christmas Appeal, you will be helping bring comfort and joy to the many people who rely on the cemetery for walks, reflection, wellbeing and those whose loved ones are remembered here.
