Arsonists target popular adventure playground

By Martin Booth  Sunday Apr 12, 2020

A fire in an adventure playground thought to have been started deliberately has left a community stunned.

The fire in St Paul’s Adventure Playground broke out soon after 5pm on Saturday afternoon and destroyed much of the play equipment.

Crews from Temple, Southmead, Bedminster and Kingswood fire stations attended the fire, using three 45mm jets and one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the blaze.

“Sad to announce there has been a devastating fire at the playground today,” the team from the playground wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

The statement added: “Thanks for the overwhelming community support. We will update you with our developments tomorrow. Stay home, stay safe and remember, we are in this together and will come through it to become so much stronger.”

During the coronavirus lockdown, the playground has been closed but APE Project, who run the site,  have been looking at ways they can support those who use the playground, often families with no outdoor space at home.

Initial thoughts have been food distribution and art activity packs augmented with online activity ideas and physical exercise routines for small spaces.
